Patricia Marie Newlin (née Alexander), a beacon of love and laughter for her family and friends, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in the arms of her beloved granddaughter, Alexis Marie Newlin, in Hobart, Indiana, at the age of 83. Born on March 8, 1942, in Hammond, Indiana, Patricia—fondly known as Pat—devoted her life to her children, her church, and her career as an educator. As a mother, she poured her heart and soul into raising her sons, Daniel James Newlin and John Bernard Newlin, instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, and perseverance. She believed that the foundation of a fulfilling life was built on strong relationships, compassion for others, and a sense of community. Pat's unwavering dedication to her family was evident as she nurtured her children, encouraging them to pursue their dreams while always being there to support them through life's challenges. She taught them the importance of companionship, showing them that bonds of love and friendship enrich our lives and provide strength in difficult times. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love, where everyone felt welcomed and valued. For 30 years, Patricia served as a 1st Grade Teacher in the Gary, Indiana school system, leaving a profound legacy of kindness, compassion, and a love for learning. Her commitment to her students was unmatched; she often used her own paycheck to purchase supplies from teaching stores, ensuring that her students had the tools they needed to succeed. Her selflessness and dedication to underprivileged children spoke volumes about her heart, as she gave far more than she ever received. Patricia was not only an educator but also a devoted woman of God. She immersed herself in her faith, reading the Bible daily and actively participating in the Portage St. Peters Church community. Her belief in the importance of relationships was evident in everything she did, as she prioritized family and friendships above all else. In the last two years of her life, Patricia was surrounded by the love, care, and companionship of her dedicated healthcare workers, who treated her like family. She cherished these relationships deeply and was grateful for the kindness and support they provided during her final journey. In retirement, Patricia continued her mission of service by volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital, where her gentle spirit and humor brought joy to many. An avid reader, she cherished the world of literature, often devouring nearly a book a week. Her love extended to her beloved dogs, including her loyal companion Gracie, and her cherished late pets, Bonnie, Maymebelle, and Snowy. Patricia is survived by her sons, Daniel James Newlin and John Bernard Newlin; her grandchildren, Alexis Marie Newlin, Kelly Jacob Newlin, Chad Nicholas Cheek and Sinara Pardo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille M. Alexander and Bernard Alexander; her sister, Noreen "Pug" Alexander Rayl; her brother, Bernard Lee "Butch" Alexander; and her long-time devoted partner, Joe Sistanich. Patricia will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial visitation and memorial service to celebrate Patricia’s life will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church 6540 Central Avenue Portage, Indiana 46368 on Saturday, December 6, 2025 visitation 11:30 AM until the time of service at 12:00 PM.
