Nick Stergos

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Nick M. Stergos, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 20, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. Nick was born to Michael and Alice Stergos in Gary, Indiana, on August 22, 1957. He grew up always surrounded by family and loved ones. He attended William Wirt High School. He went on to marry the love of his life, Sheri. They built a beautiful life together in Merrillville, Indiana, and then in Hebron, Indiana, where they raised two beloved sons: Michael and Patrick. Nick worked at Riggs Outdoor Power Equipment in Valparaiso, Indiana, for 32 years and became the Vice President of Parts and Services. He was also a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Merrillville, Indiana. Nick was preceded in death by his mother, Alice (Meneakis) Stergos; father, Michael N. Stergos; and father-in-law, Francis Girton. He is survived by his loving wife, Sheri (Girton) Stergos, who never left his side; children Michael (Erika) Stergos and Patrick (Tabatha) Stergos; sister Sophie (Alex) Emmanoilidis; mother-in-law Dorothy Girton; special cousins Nitsa and Nick Foundos, Karen and Don Highsmith; and loving nephew and niece, Arte (Martha) Emmanoilidis and Aleka (Michael) Dovellos. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and family that he loved very much. Nick was a simple man full of kindness and generosity. He built a life rooted in family, laughter, honesty, and hard work. There’s nothing he loved more than his family, his job, and a nice cold beer after a long day’s work. His memory will live on through the lives that he touched. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 24th, from 4:00-8:00 pm, with a Trisagion Prayer Service at 5:00 pm, at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, Indiana. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 25th, at 10:00 am, at Saints Constantine and Helen, 8000 Madison St, Merrillville, Indiana, with Fr. Dimitri Burikas and Fr. Ted Poteres officiating.
