Nancy Easton

Nancy Easton (Soptich), one who never met a stranger, was a fierce card player, and a fantastic baker, passed away on August 11, 2026, peacefully at the age of 75 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was born on May 12, 1951, in Elkhart, Indiana to Joseph and Erma (Bruncz) Soptich. Nancy attended Marian High School before transferring to Elkhart High School. Upon graduation, Nancy began her post-secondary degree at Ball State University, before transferring to Indiana State University, where she earned her degree in education. Nancy devoted 32 years to teaching and retired from Michigan City High School. Faith was an important part of Nancy's life. She was a devoted member of St. Bridget's Church for more than 40 years. Following her retirement, she found even more opportunities to become involved in her church and community, including belonging to St. Anne's Confraternity of Christian Mothers. Nancy loved a good beach day, where she could be found reading a novel or chatting amongst those around her. She could start a conversation with anyone, including those waiting in lines with her. Nancy was curious about the world around her and enjoyed hearing other people's stories. She always enjoyed a good card game where she expected and wanted to win. Others playing with her wanted her to win as well, because they would hear how unfair her loss was. Nancy was a fantastic cook, particularly in baking. She enjoyed making ethnic dishes that she grew up with. Above this though, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Nancy has been married to John Easton for 32 years, just shy of 33 years. The love that she gave them will continue to live on through the generations. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Soptich; mother, Erma Soptich; brother, Bud Soptich; father-in-law, John Easton Sr.; and mother-in-law, Catherine Easton. She is survived by her husband, John Easton; children, Kevin (Connie) Gornik, Jennifer Gornik, Eric (Jessica) Easton, Erin Easton, and Kurt (Lisa) Easton. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Ben) Gornik, Blair Easton, Xavier Easton, Hal Easton, Hazel Easton, and Aidan Easton. Besides her immediate family, she was loved by the Easton clan and many friends as well. Nancy leaves behind a lifetime of stories, traditions, laughter, recipes, and memories - and a family who was so very fortunate to call her wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday August 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. directly at St. Bridgets Catholic Church, 107 Main St, Hobart, Indiana.
