James 'Big Jim' Earl Malott Sr., age 54 of Crown Point, passed away on January 27, 2017, Merrillville IN. Jim was a Veteran Lance Corporal of the Marine Corps. He worked as a General Contractor for over 23 years, a Union Iron Worker, and an EMT-B. James was born November 11th, 1962 in Gary, IN to Catherine R Wright and Harvey "Jack" Earl Malott Jr. He graduated from Crown Point High School in 1981. Jim married Darla Kay Brown on May 30th, 1987 in Lake Village, IN. He won many various awards while serving in the Marine Corps. Jim always said his biggest accomplishments were his wife and both his children. James took pride in being able to make something out of nothing. He had many hobbies over the years from skydiving, scuba diving, hunting, fishing, cooking, board games & cards, puzzles, making models, movies, and most of all family time. Jim was a member of the American Legion of Hobart since 2015. He was an active leader with 4-H when his children were younger. Jim was a loving, devoted, and caring son, husband, and father. His life revolved around his wife and children. He felt education and family came above all else next to faith. Jim's quote for life was, "All evil needs to prosper are for good men to do nothing." He was the kind of man that would help a stranger or friend in need just the same. Jim was very out spoken and may have given his opinion whether asked for or not. He loved to travel and see the beauty that the world had to offer while he was serving in the Marine Corps. Jim will be missed dearly and all the stories he would share with anyone who wanted to listen. He is survived by his wife- Darla K. Malott; daughter- Jessica N Malott; son- James E. Malott Jr; mother- Catherine R Wright; step-father- George Cunningham; sister- Mary Hogge and family; brother- Michael W. Malott and family; uncle- Darrel Wright and family; uncle- Tony B. Wright and family; uncle Rome Wright and family; aunt -Rosemary Malott and family, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father- Harvey "Jack" E. Malott; uncle- Grover Malott; aunt- Dianne Wethington; aunt- Shirley Wittler, and uncle- George "Pug" Malott.
