Fred Carl Crawford Sr.

Fred Carl Crawford, of Hobart, Indiana, was born December 17, 1966, in Gary, Indiana. Fred was a proud Hobart Brickie and a man who was deeply loved by his family, friends, and so many people whose lives he touched over the years. He had one of those personalities people remembered — funny, warm, easy to be around, and always ready with a joke. That sense of humor stayed with Fred all the way through his final days. Even during the darkest moments, he could still find a way to make somebody laugh and lighten the room. That was just who he was. Fred loved fishing, camping, being outdoors, and working on golf courses. He spent many years as a greenskeeper, most recently at River Pointe Country Club, where he was able to spend his days doing work he enjoyed and being surrounded by nature. In his later years, one of Fred's favorite places was beneath his tree at Kirby Manor. He could often be found sitting there, watching the world go by, visiting with people, and simply enjoying nature for what it was. More than almost anything, Fred loved spending time with his brother, Chuck Crawford. The two were not only brothers but best friends. Their routine of coffee every morning at the Bright Spot, followed by a joint and plenty of laughs, became one of those simple traditions that meant everything. Fred treasured those mornings and the time he shared with Chuck. Fred also loved traveling with his children and their families, whether it was staying in hotels, visiting parks, or just getting away together. Those trips gave him some of his happiest memories, because what mattered most to Fred was simply being with the people he loved. He was a very loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Fred leaves behind his children, Fred Crawford Jr. and Tiffany Hertel (Bud); his grandchildren, Jocelyn Crawford, Jaylee Humes, and Jacob Crawford; and his great-granddaughter, Esmerelda Humes. He is also survived by his stepmother, Ruth Crawford; and his sisters, Sandy Dagenais (Tom), Carol Kelly, and Nancy Mitchell. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Freddie Crawford; his mother, Judy Killens; and his beloved brother and best friend, Chuck Crawford (Karen). Fred will be remembered for his humor, his love of the outdoors, his loyalty to the people he loved, and the way he showed up as a son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was loved by many, and he will be missed more than words can say. We like to think Fred has already found the perfect golf course in heaven, enjoying a round with Freddie and Chuck — laughing, telling stories, giving each other a hard time, and picking up right where they left off.
