Albert Yelich

Albert Yelich, age 82, of Hobart passed away November 26, 2024. His parents were Daisy Hack and Michael Yelich Sr and his Sister was Carmmelita Steyer and brother Michael Yelich Jr. who preceded him in death. . Al was raised in Hoosier Boys Town and was the youngest boy to ever attend Boy Town. He was a graduate of Dyer Central High School were he was an All State and All American Football player and a 3 sport athlete. He was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Illinois. Due to a career ending injury he lost his scholarship and went back to Hoosier Boys Town with then wife, June Davis Yelich. They became house parents to several young men they consider their sons to this day. June and Al had three children: Kimberly Yelich, Albert Yelich (Mylissa Oakes Yelich), Andrea Yelich. They had three beautiful grandchildren, Jacob Yelich, Peyton Yelich (fiancé John Cory) and Alyson Yelich. Later in life he was blessed to meet and fall in love with his fiancé, Kathy Pejoski and was deeply loved and cared for by her and her family which included Brad (Erica) Cassoday, Chris (Crystal) Cassoday, Stacy (Ralph) Borman, Nicole (Ryun Charnetzky) Pejoski; grandchildren- Hayley and Hannah Borman, Dilynn Charnetzky, Nicholas Cassoday, Sydney Lison; great grandchildren- Wyatt and Alayna. Al had his best friend and brother Bob Schumann who preceded him in death and wife Marjorie and family that filled his life with so many wonderful memories. He had a foster brother- Billy (Vickie) Filter and many loving nieces and nephews and dear friends he left behind. Al was a jack of all trades he could do anything he set his mind to and he would donate his talents to anyone who needed help. He became a skilled Union Electrician and he wired many buildings in our area. There was never a job too big or too scary. He was a proud IBEW Union Member of Local 697 Electricians for over 55 years and now retired. He served on various committees to help the Union Hall out. After retiring as an electrician, he worked and retired from the Merrillville School Corporations Maintenance Dept. As a hobby, he enjoyed working on small engines. Albert was a member of St. Michaels and Our Lady of Consolation Church he was an usher and a greeter. You would always see him holding a baby at the back of the church. He was like a “Baby Whisperer”. He believed in getting involved in his community and giving back. He was a member of Holy Name Society, Gary Sportsmen’s Club, Slovak Club, K of C and Lions Club. He stayed involved in athletics by becoming an IHSAA official and member of the Lake County Officials Association, mentoring new officials. He was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman, past president of Schererville Town Board and Schererville Police Commissioner and helped with the Tri City Mental Health. He raised money for the Schererville K-9 Unit. He fought a long, hard battle with cancer and never complained. Please do not cry for Al but get involved and do a good deed for someone that is what he would have wanted Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held directly at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 8303 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN at 12 p.m. on December 4, 2024.
