Albert "Al" M. Malayter

Albert M. Malayter, 78, of Hebron, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on August 25, 1948, in Gary, Indiana, Albert lived a life defined by compassion, dedication, and service to others. A longtime resident of Hebron, Indiana, he devoted more than 40 years to the medical profession, touching countless lives through his work as a Paramedic, Emergency Room Nurse, and Oncology Nurse. Throughout his distinguished career, Al provided comfort, care, and hope to patients and their families during some of life's most difficult moments. His commitment to healing and helping others left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Above all else, Al cherished his family and the many friendships he built throughout his life. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with people and never met a stranger. Whether through his work, his community, or life's everyday encounters, Al formed lifelong friendships and treasured the relationships he cultivated over the years. He deeply valued the people he met along the way and was grateful for the many friends who became like family. Al was a student of life. Outside of his many degrees from Indiana University (B.A. General Studies) Ivy Tech (Science and Nursing) and being a proud alumnus of Holy Angels School and Horace Mann High School, he studied nature, history, culture, and languages throughout his life. He was a builder intentionally and a breaker unintentionally. He was fearless and at times reckless, which some may know if you’ve been near him while he cast a fishing line. Al was passionate about people. He was a protector, a provider, and most importantly to him, he was a friend. Beyond the degrees, Al was an avid hobbyist that included fishing, camping, gardening, baking and canning, to name a few. He also built beautiful wooden rocking horses that were given to families near and far to be enjoyed by little ones for generations, including his grandchildren. Al was proud of the rich and full life that he and his wife created and shared. He will be remembered for his kind heart, steady presence, quick smile, intelligence and unwavering dedication to both his family, friends, and profession. Whether caring for a patient, supporting a friend, or spending time with loved ones, he approached life with empathy, generosity, and quiet strength. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Malayter and Albert Malayter. Albert is survived by the love of his life, Janis L. Malayter; his son, Clayton Andrew Malayter, daughter-in-law Stephanie, and grandchildren Trajan Albert and Hayes August; his daughter, Jessica Marie Malayter, daughter-in-law Natalie; and his brothers, Chuck (Robin) Malayter of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Ed (Kris) Malayter of Holland, Michigan; and Mark (Sharon) Malayter of Dyer, Indiana. He is also survived by many extended family members, dear friends, former colleagues, and the countless people whose lives were enriched by his friendship, compassion, and care. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the family he loved, the friendships he treasured, and the example he set through a lifetime of service and compassion. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. Celebration of Life A Celebration of Life honoring Albert will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m with Memorial Service to follow at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 10101 Broadway Crown Point, IN 46307. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Albert are invited to attend and share in remembering a life well lived.
