Our hearts are shattered to a million pieces and only what eases the pain is knowing you are with God and your family. No more pain! Lonnie Chabes, age 67, of Portage, IN passed away on May 5, 2022. Lonnie was born on April 15th,1955 to the late Jose E. and Lillian (Romero) Chabes. Lonnie was a loving and loyal husband to his wife Belinda Chabes(their) nicknames to each other were Papi & Mama)and loving children Lonnie Jr (Crystal) Chabes, Carlos (Elizabeth Pavich) Chabes, Tracy (Derrick) Ransom, Stephanie Chabes; Others who were like children to him were JC & Jeff Coleman, Stacy Kabbany & Jill Armstrong. Grandchildren; Alexandra Chabes, Lonnie Chabes III, Angel Chabes, Jordan, Kaitlynn, Kylee (Riley), Londan Chabes, Deja Ransom, Derrick Jr Ransom, Gia Hogge, Jada & Angel Barquet, Rey-Rey Maldonado; Nine Great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Jose E. & Lillian Chabes, brothers: Lupe, Ricky & Jesse Chabes, sister: Ida Ortiz and spouses: Angelina Chabes & Gayle Chabes. Lonnie retired with 35 years from U.S. Steel as a Crane Operator. Lonnie had a six years battle with Diabetes and dialysis that left him as a double amputee, numerous surgeries and long periods in and out of the hospital. While Lonnie was born in Gary, Indiana, his family moved to Denver Colorado when he was 15 years old. He met his wife Angelina and married for the first time. He returned to Indiana when he was 18 years old with his wife and Lonnie JR., within the next four years Carlos then Tracy arrived. Lonnie second wife Elaine, brought another blessed daughter Stephanie to complete his family. Lonnie was a young parent, raising four children. He never gave up on Love and loved to say "I Do; He was married four times. He has been described as having one of the loudest (an understatement), most contagious laugh. When he walks in the room you definitely knew he ARRIVED. He spoke what was on his mind-loudly. When you come from a large Latino family, volume is best. He had lots of good times and a lifelong love for fishing and music-especially Santana. Back in the day he loved Disco dancing which included lots of “partying” and he was an avid Chicago Bears fan. Lonnie loved being around his family and his Yorkies, they helped heal and comfort him during difficult days. Lonnie is survived by brothers: Joe (Carol) Chabes, Frank Chabes, Rudy (Eileen) Chabes, Arthur Chabes, and sisters: Juanita Chabes, Adeline (Jim) Vargas, Carmen (Jerry) Regalado; many, many nieces and nephews. Visitation for Lonnie will be Monday, May 9, 2022 from 1-3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., until the time of service at 6:00 p.m., at Burns Funeral Home, 701 East 7th Street.
