Jeanette Lynn (nee Lara) Mendez, age 69, of Portage, climbed the stairway to Heaven on Saturday, September 18, 2021. She was born March 4, 1952 in Gary, IN., the daughter of Wilfred and Opal (Russell) Lara. Jeanette was a graduate of Portage High School, Class of 1971. She loved to cook and loved working in her yard. Jeanette enjoyed many activities when she lived in Las Vegas. She liked to camp in the mountains and repel. Jeanette was a server at Treasure Island for many years. She loved her grandbabies and was the best mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed. Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; children-Chad Eric Edwards, Carrie Lynn Edwards; sister-Yvonne Monacy. Jeanette is survived by her son-Charles Irving Edwards; brothers-Jerry Lara, Mike (Marion) Lara; sisters-Denise (Russ) Richmond, Diane Lara Hoffman; grandchildren-Charles Edward II, Lynn Edwards, Alex Edwards, Taylor Edwards, Alexandria “Alex” Edwards, Isabella “Bell” Edwards, Liam Edwards; great grandchildren-Eli Edwards, Ellianna Edwards; many nieces and nephews. Graveside service for Jeanette will be held at McCool Cemetery, 2700 McCool Road, Portage, IN, on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 3:30 p.m. We ask family and friends to arrive around 3:15 p.m. for service.
