August "Gus" "Augie" LaMantia

December 14, 1931 - November 27, 2020

August “Gus” “Augie” S. LaMantia, age 88, of Valparaiso, passed away peacefully on November 27th. He was preceded in death by wife Dorothy and brother Norman. He is survived by his children Sherrie Maschmeyer, Glen LaMantia (Sandra) Renee' Henke (David) and Coreen LaMantia (Ronald). He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. August was born in Hammond, IN, graduated from Tolleston High School in 1950. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce where he proudly served for 4 years. In 1956 he became a member of the IBEW in Hammond, IN as an electrician. He worked for Tri-City Electric for most of his career, Retiring at the age of 62. He was very proud of the fact that he was member #119 at the Local 697 Credit Union. He was a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge Masons of Indiana. He was the oldest living member of the Northwoods Amaizo Club where he vacationed in a small cabin in Watersmeet, Michigan, since the age of 12. He was a member of the Hobart, Indiana Orchestra where he played the clarinet. In his younger years he was a champion bowler, he loved to golf, and spent weekends on a speedboat water skiing and cooking out with his brother electricians and their families. For 25 years, along with his wife Dorothy, he was a snowbird in Florida enjoying fishing, friends, and the great outdoors. August was a quiet, shy, and kind man who was adored by anyone who knew him and will be missed by all. Due to Covid-19, there will be no services. A private memorial will be held at a future date.
