Tevor David Novack, M.D.

Tevor David Novack, M.D., age 81, of Valparaiso, formerly of Boston, MA, passed away March 5, 2010 at the VNA Hospice in Valparaiso. Dr. Novack was a member of the Indiana State Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Indiana University School of Medicine member of clinical faculty of Northwest Center for Medical Education. He was a Bird Colonel (Ret) with the United States Army with 30 years of service in the Medical Corps. Dr. Novack was certified and licensed with the American Board of Surgery, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana and Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine. He earned his M.D. at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA and B. S. Magna cum Laude, Tufts College, Medford, MA. Residency – General Surgery: Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Residency – General Surgery: Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA and Internship – Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA. He was an Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care Provider under contract to “Partners in Care”, St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point. He was a Consultant in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He was Plant Surgeon and Medical Director at U. S. Steel, Gary Works in Gary, IN from September 1979 to December 1994. He was on active duty from July 1956 to retirement in November 1979. He was Chief, Department of Surgery at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, NC from July 1975 to September 1979; Chief, Professional Services and Chief, Department of Surgery, Cutler Army Hospital, Fort Devens, MA from July 1974 to July, 1975; Chief, General Surgery Service, 97th General Hospital, Frankfurt, Germany from July 1970 to July 1974; Chief, Department of Surgery, United States Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, KY from September 1968 to July 1970; Chief, Surgery, 85th Evacuation Hospital, Vietnam from July, 1965 through July, 1966; Chief, General Surgery, Fort Leonard Wood Army Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, MO from May 1964 to July, 1965, 20th Station Hospital, Nuernberg, Germany from July 1961 through March, 1964; 279th Station Hospital, Berlin, Germany from April, 1961 through June 1961, 121st Evacuation Hospital, Korea, July 1960 to February, 1961; 44th Surgical Hospital, Korea from February, 1960 to July, 1960. He was Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery, Indiana University, N.W. Medical School from 1980 to present; Preceptor to Physician Assistant Students, with appointment as Assistant Professor Health Sciences, Baylor University, Waco, Texas; Cutler Army Hospital, Fort Devens, MA from 1974 to 1975; Director of Pre-Specialty Residency, General Surgery, United States Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, KY from 1968 to 1970; He was a Staff Member of Methodist Hospital of Gary and Merrillville, IN from 1979 to present; a Fellow, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine – appointed, 1990; Fellow, American College of Surgeons, initiated October, 1963; American Medical Association, Indiana Medical Association and Lake County Medical Society. He served on the Emergency and Disaster Committee, Methodist Hospital of Gary and Merrillville, IN from 1979 to present; the Governor’s Task Force on Worker’s Compensation and Occupational Disease Laws Reform from 1990 to 1991; Senator Daniel Quayle’s Advisory Committee for Health Care Issues from 1983 to 1988 and the Board of Directors, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. He was awarded the Legion of Merit in August, 1979, the Meritorious Service Medal in February, 1977, the Bronze Star Medal in 1966 and a Letter of Appreciation, Capitol ROK Infantry Division, Republic of Korea Army, July, 1966 He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Kalah and Allan Novack. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marty A. Novack; his children: Stacey (Jack) Koroluk of Valparaiso; Mark Allan Novack of Belgium and Claudia Emily Novack of Brookline, MA; grandchildren: Lauren and Jackson Koroluk, Caleb Novack and Aubrey Novack; brother: Mark Edward Novack of Finland. Funeral services Monday March 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, with Rabbi Stanley Halpern officiating. Interment Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.
