Robert Francis Kelly Jr., 93, of Hobart, Indiana, formerly of Gary and Miller, Indiana, passed away on July 21, 2026, in Hobart. There are some people who pass through this world, and then there are those who become part of its foundation. Robert was the latter. Born to Robert F. Kelly Sr. and Verna (Kuzma) Kelly, Robert grew into a man whose life was defined not by the attention he sought, but by the strength, kindness, and steady presence he gave to others. He was a rock that weathered countless storms—a quiet giant, whose strength was measured not by the weight he could carry, but by the burdens he carried without complaint. A proud graduate of Horace Mann High School in Gary, Class of 1951, Robert went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1960. His love of country and respect for those who served remained with him throughout his life. He carried history in his heart and held a deep appreciation for the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who fought in the great battles of World War II. To Robert, their stories were not simply chapters in a history book; they were reminders of duty, sacrifice, and the extraordinary things ordinary people can accomplish. Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was a man of kindness wrapped in stern wisdom. He was a passionate sports fan who celebrated the successes of his favorite teams, but some of his greatest joys were found beneath the Friday night lights, watching his grandson take the field. He is survived by his loving wife, Aurora (Colina) Kelly; his daughters, Kathryn Kelly, Susan Kelly, and Cynthia Thornton (Glen); his stepdaughters, Kimberly Randhan and Kathleen Randhan; his grandchildren, Karen, Ryan, Sean, and Eric; his great-grandchildren, Hayden and Liam; his sister, Arleen Hannon; and his nephews, John, Andy, and Dan. The silence Robert leaves behind feels impossibly loud, and the space he filled can never truly be replaced. But mountains do not disappear. They remain, shaping the landscape long after the clouds have hidden their peaks.
