R. May Walker

May Walker, age 86 of Valparaiso, IN went home to be with our Lord on Monday, August 12, 2024. She is survived by her three children: Eric (Linda) Walker of Valparaiso; Joy (Tony) Christensen of San Diego, CA; Tina (Steve) Erickson of Plymouth, MN; brothers: Gordon (Pranee) Hattori of Las Vegas, NV, Ted (Barbara) Hattori of Dallas, TX, and Jeff (Dan Goplin) Hattori of Madison, WI; sisters: Sally (Stan) Yasuda of Las Vegas, NV and Lynne (Bill) Lynch of Stoughton, WI; nine grandchildren: Adam (Kerry) Walker, Steven (Sarah) Erickson, Erica Walker, Amy (Anthony) Pacheco, Ashley (Tom) Nagashima, Kevin Erickson, Amanda (Brian) Bello, Nathan Erickson, and Katie (David) Oliver, and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Walker; father and mother, James and Saki Hattori; stepmother, Miyo Hattori; brothers: Penryn and Kenneth Hattori; sisters: Katherine Hutton and Mary Hattori, and grandson, Brent Walker. May was employed at Indiana University Northwest for 34 years, retiring in 2002. She started as a secretary in the Division of Business. May moved to Career Planning and Placement and enjoyed meeting and assisting so many students for over 25 years! She was an active member of the Deep River Church in Merrillville. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and watching many sports especially cheering on the Green Bay Packers. All her family and friends remember May’s Famous Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies which became a special treat or gift shared on so many occasions. May’s greatest joy was family. Her family has been blessed with unconditional love and support. Her positive spirit for life, her smile, and her hugs will be missed, but her Love will forever remain in our Hearts! A Celebration of Life Event will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Lincoln Highway, Merrillville, IN, 46410. Family and friends are invited to visit with May’s family from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. A memorial service is scheduled at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Deep River Church, 7500 Grand Blvd., Merrillville, IN 46410 Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, Crown Point, IN, entrusted with May’s arrangements.
