Melvin R. Schock

Melvin â€œMelâ€ R. Schock, age 89 of LOFS, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008. Born in Indiana Harbor Section of East Chicago, Mel was a graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1935, and attended the University of Chicago and Walton School of Business. He spent most of his career in the life insurance business and retired as President of First United Life Insurance Company and First United, Inc in1984. He was a long time member of Gary Rotary Club and Woodmar Country Club. He was an ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church for over 45 years. Mel was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Garfield Lodge No. 569, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Orak Shrine and South Lake County Shrine Club, and past member of the Royal Order of Jesterâ€™s Court 43. He was a veteran of World War II-US Army Air Corps. Mel loved singing and had a wonderful singing voice. He sang in church choirs and in High School and sang duets with his sister, Margery, in church. Preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Schock. He is survived by his Wife-Joan Lee Schock of LOFS, Son-Tim (Colleen) Schock of Munster, Daughter-Mary Jo (Joseph, Jr.) Heaton of Dixon, IL, Stepsons-Randy (Jeanne) Branson and Jay (Jill) Branson, Grandchildren-Amanda (William) Fletcher of Noblesville, IN, Alison (Nathan) Eldreth of Lexington, KY, Jon (Christie) Heaton of Cleveland, OH, Beth & Sarah Heaton of Chicago, IL, Ellen Heaton of Dixon, IL, Step-grandchildren-Michael Branson, Wendy (Scott) Paterson, Spencer and Mia Branson, Step-great-granddaughters-Samantha & Melanie Paterson; Sister-Margery Hindmarch of Munster, IN, niece-Kathy (Robert) Schwingerdorf, Nephew-Terry (Jeanna) Hindmarch Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN Rev.
