Mary V. Peterson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Virginia Peterson, age 84 of Crown Point, Indiana who passed away July 1, 2026. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by the loving care of her family. Though Alzheimer’s may have slowly taken her memories, it never diminished her vibrant spirit, resilience and love that defined her life. Those gifts will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her. Born in Ohio, Mary spent most of her life in Chicago, Illinois, where she lovingly raised her two children alongside her husband, David A. Peterson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dave; her mother, Grace Virginia (Jirak) Koplan; and her stepfather, Robert Koplan. Mary is survived by her devoted children, Rhonda and Thomas Peterson, and by her loving sisters, Julie and Helen. Family was always at the center of Mary's life. She held a special place in her heart for her grandparents, Alma Maria Jirak (Sundberg) and Thomas Edward Jirak, as well as her aunt, Alice Jirak, who helped raise her. She often shared fond memories of swimming, roller skating, and ice skating during her childhood. Mary embraced life with enthusiasm and determination. Although she never learned to drive, she rarely let anything stand in her way. Whether by bus, train, or on foot, she could find her way almost anywhere. After moving to Crown Point, she enjoyed walking into town to participate in activities at the senior center and attend events at Bulldog Park. Her children were fortunate to experience the many things that brought Mary joy. Together they visited lakefront beaches, playgrounds, libraries, circuses, museums, theaters for plays, movie theaters, concerts, zoos, and pet stores. Her lifelong love of animals became a lasting gift passed on to her children. She cared for her dog, Princess, as is she was one of her children. Life was not always easy, but Mary faced every challenge with remarkable strength and perseverance. When her children were young, she often worked two jobs to help support her family. For many years, she worked in the Marshall Field's candy kitchen, carefully packing the store's famous Frango mint chocolates. After a long day at work, she would come home carrying the sweet scent of chocolate. Mary will be deeply missed by her children, family, and friends. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering love will never be forgotten, and the memories she created will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband (Lot 32/Block 19/Section 67) at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 7201 Archer Rd. Justice, IL 60458.
