Mary Evelyn Kraft

Mary Evelyn Kraft (nee Crisman), age 101, of Hobart passed away Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 in Crown Point, IN. She was born on August 14, 1916 in Deep River, Indiana (Hobart) to John and Ella Crisman, who proceeded her in death. On July 18, 1936 she married Frank Kraft Jr. who proceeded her in death. Her brothers: Russell and Owen Crisman; her sisters: Dorothea Mosses, Frances Thatcher and Ella Ruth Thon, proceeded her in death also. Mary is survived by her children: Stewart (Susan) Kraft, Conrad Kraft, and Mary (Phillip) Govert; Daughter-in-Law: Tammy Kraft; Grandchildren: Stewart Kraft Jr., Elizabeth Connolly, Stacey (Scott) Mehlberg, Jonathan (Anna) Kraft, Andrew (Vicki) Govert, and Denise (Michael) Flauding; Great Grandchildren: Taylor (Rod) Kraft, Sara (Corey) Ryman, Calvin Connolly, Evan Connolly, Addison Mehlberg, Zack Mehlberg, Jonathan Kraft, Hardee Kraft, Anna Govert, Ella Govert, Katelyn (Chris Cramer) Flauding, Kenneth Flauding, Kara Flauding; Great-Great Grandchildren: Hiro Ito, Savannah Buss, Wyatt Ryman, Serenity Cramer, and Abigail Cramer. Mary graduated from Merrillville High School in 1935 where she was the center for the girls’ basketball team. She was a member of the Hobart First United Church and #318 Order of the Eastern Star. Mary was very active in the Hobart community as a 4H Leader, Sunday School teacher, Republican Precinct Committee Women, Magdalene Circle member, PTA member. She also enjoyed attending the Lake County Fair and volunteering at school. She and Frank were “Snow Birds” who loved to visit Mesa, Arizona and watch her beloved Cubs in Spring Training. Her life-long devotion to the Cubs started at age 11 when she would listen to the games on the radio. She attended the World Series in 1945, but had to wait until she turned 100 for the Cubs to win the World Series in 2016! She also followed local teams, and was an avid Hobart Brickie fan following track, cross country and football for many years. Mary was committed and devoted to her family and friends. She loved cooking and baking her prize pies! She was a fantastic mother, grandparent, and friend. She will truly be missed by all whose hearts and lives she touched. She was generous and giving of her time, talents and treasures to community and church causes to improve the lives of others. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E 7th St., Hobart. #314 Order of the Eastern Star funeral service at 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m. a memorial service with Rev. Rebecca Lynn Smith officiating. Entombment at Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum, Valparaiso, IN.
