Margaret DeGeer

Margaret DeGeer (nee Spiro Stevoff) , age 91 passed away January 7, 2016, in Cincinnati Ohio, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Marge was born in Gary in 1924 and lived most of her life in the area. For the past 8 years, she lived with and was cared for by her daughter, Debbie DeGeer. Marge graduated from Froebel High School in 1942. She married William (Bill) DeGeer, the love of her life, in 1954. Marge was a long-time employee of Standard Liquors in downtown Gary and Merrillville. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Bill DeGeer; her brothers, Nick and Steve Stevoff. Marge is survived by her daughter, Debbie DeGeer of Cincinnati, Ohio, her sister, Helen Birac of Sun City, Arizona, and her nieces, Paula Manoski, Doreen (Tom) Andriacchi, Diane (Gaston)Lucido , Nadine (Mike McQuilan) Stevoff, and Sheryl (Robert) Matheu. Marge was the daughter of immigrants from Bitola, Macedonia. She was proud of her heritage and had strong ties to the Macedonian community. Marge joined the Macedonian Youth Organization (MYO) when she was a girl. She continued her affiliation with the club while it was renamed the Macedonian Social Organization (MSO), eventually becoming the club’s president. Marge published a monthly newsletter for the club, a job she was so good at. She was asked to continue as long as she was able. Members looked forward to reading Marge’s sharp-witted commentary on community happenings, and to see if Marge wrote or published a photo of their families. Not only was Marge the heart of the Macedonian social scene, Marge was the life of every party, always dancing, always joking, and always enjoying the company of others. For all those who knew and loved her, she will always be remembered. For the last time Marge has signed off, “Dosta”, enough. A Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN.
