Joseph F Sabocik

Joseph F. Sabocik, age 87, of Hobart and formerly of Portage, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019. The son of Michael and Julia Vapensky Sabocik, he was born in Gary on August 26, 1931. He was a graduate of Horace Mann School. Joe was a proud Air Force veteran, and a member of the Portage VFW Post 7760 and American Legion Post 0260. He retired from the E.J.&E. Railroad with 34 years of service. Joe was a member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church in Portage. Joe enjoyed spending time with his fellow vets at the VFW and American Legion, and following his children and grandchildren at their motocross competitions and gymnastic meets. He could often be found cuddling with Bebe or Emma, his canine “other children” in his recliner, watching his favorite game shows. Nothing made him happier than to spend time with family, and he was always available to help out with repairs or other needs. The entire family is especially grateful to Ann Sabocik, who provided such loving care to her brother while he lived with her in recent years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dotty; his parents; brothers: Michael Sabocik, his twin Frank Sabocik, Steve Andricks, George and John Andrikanich; and sisters: Marie (Sabocik) Hand, Betty Sabocik, Margaret Sabocik, Julia (Andrikanich) Jancek, and Helen (Andrikanich) Kaufman. Joe was a loving father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his children: Barbara Candiano and Joseph (Yvonne) Sabocik, both of Portage; six grandchildren: Chris Chelich, Brian Chelich, Craig (Kristle) Candiano, Adam (Randi) Candiano, Angela (Omar) Breiz, Trisha Sabocik; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Ann Sabocik of Hobart; sister-in-law, Elvera Sabocik of DeLand, FL; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved pups. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at 10:00 a.m,. at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road, Portage, with visitation at the church prior to the Mass from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m., Rev.
