Joan Malatestinic

Joan Malatestinic, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and cherished member of the community, passed away on May 28, 2024. Her life was a symphony of love, and unwavering commitment to family and music. Born in East Chicago, Indiana on February 21, 1937, attended Saint Stanislaus grade school and graduated from Bishop Noll in 1955. She attended Alverno College for two years, then she embarked on her most important role: raising her five children. Joan’s nurturing spirit and boundless love shaped the lives of William, Wendy, Mike, the late Paul, and David. She instilled in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the joy of learning. She was an active member of the Junior Women’s club and held various offices. She was also a member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) for women. Joan was also an integral part of the success and growth of T&M Equipment Company over many years. Joan’s thirst for knowledge led her back to college, and she graduated from Valparaiso University once her children had all completed their own educational journeys. Her commitment to learning extended beyond textbooks; she became the Director of Children’s Education at the Northwest Indiana Symphony, where she inspired countless young minds to appreciate the magic of music. She was an accomplished pianist, sharing her talent with her family and students alike. Christmas carols played on her piano became a cherished tradition, with her grandchildren singing along joyfully during the holiday season. She leaves behind her devoted husband, William Malatestinic, and her children: William Jr (Liz), Wendy Svenstrup (Mike), Mike (Rhonda), the late Paul (Lynn) and David (Karen). Her legacy continues through her 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her love and wisdom in their hearts. In addition to her immediate family, Joan is survived by her sister Rosanne Stachon (Jerry), as well as her sister Diane Stempkowski (Larry) and brother-in-law Bob (Jackie) Meinzer. She fondly remembers her late sister Sue Meinzer and brother Stanley (Louise), whose spirits dance alongside her in eternity. Joan Malatestinic’s life was a beautiful composition—a melody of love, laughter, and shared moments. As we say goodbye, let us remember her as the conductor of our hearts, leading us toward harmony and grace. The visitation will take place on Monday, June 3, 2024 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7667 E. 109th Ave, Crown Point, IN. Rev.
