Henry G. Peters

Henry Gerard Peters, age 76, of Merrillville, IN, passed peacefully into the arms of God on September 7, 2026, after a brief illness. A giant man with an even bigger heart, he was born May 10, 1950, to Albert and Louise (Weber) Peters of Glen Park (Gary), IN. After attending St. Mark's Catholic School along with his five siblings and most of the rest of his neighborhood, Henry went on to graduate from Andrean High School in 1968. He spent two years studying at Rose Polytechnic Institute before returning to the Region for good and graduating from Purdue University Calumet with degrees in technology and computer technology. He spent his career developing and improving computer systems for multiple local and national companies, including Community Hospital in Munster, Ribordy Drugs, Fannie May Candies and Royal Crown Bottling as well as several others. Henry devoted his personal time to his two daughters and his faith. He was active in virtually every aspect of parish life at St. Andrew (later Our Lady Queen of Martyrs) Catholic Church - from ministering at Mass to serving as treasurer of the Men’s Club to selling ‘bars and bells’ at the parish carnival - and Knights of Columbus Council #4047, where he served as financial secretary for 30 years while also training other financial secretaries throughout Indiana. He was also a proud ‘hero for babies’ - an O+ regular blood donor with the American Red Cross, giving 6-7 times every year for 40+ years, with over 33 gallons of blood donated. Henry is survived by his two daughters, Gretchen (Alex) Bergstedt and Sarah Peters; brothers, Eugene Peters and Albert (Bettie) Peters, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Carol Stinnett and Sherry Peters; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Joseph Steiner; brothers, Richard and Thomas Peters, and sister, Susan Gaines. A visitation will be held at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN, on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place directly at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs - North campus, 801 W. 73rd Avenue, Merrillville, IN, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Ted Mauch Officiating. Loved ones are invited to join a procession following the service to St. Paul's Cemetery in Valparaiso for Interment.
