Edward C. Nelson

Edward Carl Nelson age 92 of Hobart, passed away March 4 2012. Ed was born May 20, 1919, to Owen and Caroline (nee Sapper) Nelson on a farm near Hobart, IN. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart where he taught Sunday School, was an Elder and Deacon for over 60 years and a member of the Calumet Lutheran Dart Ball Hall of Fame. He graduated from Merrillville High School in 1937. Ed was drafted into the Army October 22, 1941, captured in North Africa and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 27 months. When he returned, he married Grace Buchfuehrer on July 28, 1945. He retired from Indiana Bell Telephone with 39 years of service and was a member of VFW Post 5365 and a local group of former P.O.W.s. Ed loved his family, gardening, golf and travelling and, in his younger years, playing soft ball. He leaves his loving wife, Grace and family Tom (Pam) Nelson of Fort Wayne, Tim (Nancy) Nelson of Hobart, Ted (Leslie) Nelson of Lafayette, Terri (Phil) Mulroe of Portage and Tammy (Skip) Drahman of Noblesville, IN; loving grandchildren Tracy (Ed) Simmons of Lowell, Ed Nelson of Cedar Lake, Tim (Michelle) Nelson of Indianapolis, Craig (Jackie Randazzo) Nelson of Michigan City, Amy Nelson of Lafayette, Philip and Brendan Mulroe of Portage, and Becca, Vince, Patrick and Drew Drahman of Noblesville; and 5 great-grandchildren Eddie, Carrye and Kyle Simmons of Lowell, Noelle and Grace Nelson of Indianapolis; sister Mildred Smatana of Sun City, AZ and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Charles of Crown Point and Leslie of Farber, MO, and sister Minnie Bloede of Crown Point. Funeral Service will be Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 900 Luther Drive, Hobart. Pastor Gary Nagy officiating. Interment at Hobart Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart and at the church from 9 a.m. to time of service on Thursday.
