Cheryl E. Steffens

Cheryl E. Steffens (nee Richter), aged 70, passed away on July 13, 2025, in Munster, Indiana. Born on August 2, 1954, Cheryl was born and raised in Dolton, Illinois. She dedicated much of her life to the banking sector, culminating in a rewarding career starting at banks in Palos Heights, Hyde Park, then spanning over two decades with Chase Bank in Merrillville and Crown Point, Indiana, until her retirement in August 2019. A graduate of Thornridge High School and Illinois State University, where she earned a BA in Education, Cheryl was deeply involved in her community. Post-retirement, she discovered a passion for crime and suspense novels and was an active member of the Crocheting Club at the Crown Point Library on Wednesday afternoons. She also knitted many, many baby blankets for donation these past years for Labor of Love, an organization in her sister Pam’s community in Florida. Additionally, Cheryl devoted time to volunteering with Meals on Wheels in Merrillville, showcasing her commitment to helping others. Cheryl is survived by her sister, Pam Millsap; brothers, Ken (Sally) Coleman and twin Harry (Bonnie) Richter. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Steffens; father, Harry Richter, Sr.; mother, Ruth (nee Petersen) Richter; brother, Warren Coleman; brother-in-law, Floyd Millsap and Godson, Scott Millsap. Cheryl is also survived by three stepchildren, Amanda, Erica and Ronald; grandchildren: Hunter, Haleigh, Elijah, Jacob, Anthony and Liliana (and Lily’s loving Mom, Daniea Shwaiki); great-grandchild, Venus. Cheryl was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews; dear friends in Knox, IN, Vicki, Tammy, Rosie, Susie and best friend, John Cole. Cheryl loved visiting the farms, enjoying the work and walking the dogs. Her cherished puppy Lilly will miss her. Cheryl will be deeply missed by us, and so many more.
