Carlos Garibay

Carlos Garibay of Dyer, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, and will be reunited with his beloved wife, Rose Marie (Hernandez) Garibay, with whom he shared nearly 63 years of marriage before her passing on February 14, 2018, and his daughter, Mary, who passed away in infancy. Carlos immigrated from Mexico to the United States with limited formal education and English skills. Through hard work and determination, he built a meaningful life for himself and his family. He eventually became a United States citizen, an accomplishment that meant a great deal to him. He took his citizenship seriously and believed in doing his part, including exercising his right to vote. He spent almost 40 years as a craneman at Inland Steel, taking great pride in his work and the home he created for those he loved. His family was at the center of everything he did. Carlos was devoted to protecting them, providing for them, and giving them every opportunity to succeed. He found joy in the simple pleasures of working on cars, keeping them clean, and talking about them. He also found satisfaction in yardwork, tending to his lawn and shrubbery. He was a quiet and gentle man, yet mighty as a sword when it mattered most. He didn't need many words to make his presence known; you could see who he was in the way he lived. His perseverance and resilience became part of what he passed on to his children. He is survived by his children, Carlos (Jessica) Garibay of Indianapolis; Cynthia (Patrick) Marrie of Crown Point; Laura (Matthew) Cross of Highland; Nancy (Joseph) Weir of Fishers; Robert (Rebecca) Garibay of Valparaiso; and Debbie (Perry) White of Indianapolis; grandchildren, David and Jason (Erin); Patrick, Brian, Lauren, and Tyler; Matthew (Sarah) and Brittany; Michael and Kevin; Joshua, Megan, and Noah; and Skylar and Brianna; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Isabella; siblings, Francisca, Manuel, and Celia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie; baby daughter, Mary; parents, Carlos Garibay and Maria del Carmen Verduzco de Garibay; aunt and mother figure, Juanita Verduzco; and siblings, Javier, Jesus, Alfredo, Maria del Carmen, Irma, and Lourdes. Carlos was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a family shaped by his kindness and the example he gave. You were a fighter for 96 years, Dad. We are so proud of your strength and the life you built. Thank you for teaching us how to love and how to give with an open heart. You gave Mom the best years of her life and gave us guidance to work hard, value education, and build lives of our own. You taught us the importance of family and that our actions speak louder than words. We will carry what you taught us in our hearts. We will miss you always. A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 10 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 9640 Kennedy Avenue, Highland, IN. Rev. Gregory Bim-Merle Officiating.
