Arthur Edward Marshall

Arthur E. Marshall, 93, resident of Towne Center Assisted Living in Merrillville, Indiana, formerly of Portage, Chesterton, and Gary, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso, Indiana. Born on May 2, 1931, on the south side of Chicago to Arthur A. and Evelyn (nee Hansen) Marshall. Art graduated from Tolleston High School in 1949, where as a junior on the baseball team he was scouted by the Chicago Cubs, which began his lifelong love for the Cubs. He also loved the Chicago Bears, Indiana basketball and watching and playing golf. Originally married in 1952 to Patricia Rutherford, that year he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served from 1952-1956, being stationed in various places, including Otis AFB in Onset, Massachusetts, Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada and Travis AFB in Fairfield, California. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he was employed with the Indiana Employment Security Division for 36 years before his retirement. His love of baseball led him to coach and manage at East Glen Park Little League where he also served as President for many years. His other love was umpiring. He umpired countless games at East Glen Park, as well as the Senior League World Series held at Junedale Little League in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. He then continued as an umpire for prep baseball and softball games in Indiana. Art was also a member of the Chesterton Lions Club for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart, and he began playing dartball at St. John Lutheran Church in Gary, he continued to be an avid church dartball player participating in many tournaments in the area where he achieved numerous awards. He was a friend to so many and cared deeply for others. Dad above all else loved the Lord and his big, blended family! His most cherished times were spent with his beloved wife Dee who he married in 1978, they enjoyed playing golf, dancing the night away, and playing card games together. Their marriage blended together 7 children, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He loved all of us with his whole heart and we all loved him back just as much; he would brag about each and every one of us to anyone who would listen. You will be forever missed and loved. Until we meet again Dad, watch over us. Art was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Dolores “Dee” Marshall in August, 2020, parents; Arthur and Evelyn (who died when he was a 9 year old boy), triplet brothers; John “Jack” Marshall, and infants, James and Allen Marshall (who shortly after birth were featured in the new incubator exhibit at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago), sister; Gwendolyn Hill, brother; Ned Marshall, niece; Diane Marshall, niece; Evelyn Gallagher, great-nephew; Alex Ruesta. Survived by son; James (late Bobbi) Marshall, daughter; Leann (Kurt) Langbehn; daughter; Kathi (Rick Feterick)Marshall, bonus sons; James (Rick Gutjahr) Smith, Jay Smith, bonus daughters; Jan (late Ted) Summers and Jill (late Tom) Callaway. Grandchildren; Shannon (fiancé Brian) Marshall, Jeremy (Jessica) Marshall, Kyle Marshall, Ashley (Jake) Smithson, Matt (Tammie) Langbehn, Melissa (Mike) O’Neill, Kara Smith, Justin (Amy) Callaway, Autumn (Chris) Israelite, Keegan Smith, and Calan Smith. Great-Grandchildren; Madisyn Shorter, Kevin Marshall, Colin Marshall, Allie Smithson, Ada Smithson, Owen Langbehn, Aiden Langbehn, Addison O’ Neill, Brayden O’Neill, Lola Callaway, Dylan Callaway, Christopher Israelite, and Adriana Israelite, brother-in-law; Richard Hill, sister-in-law; Anne Marshall, sister-in-law; Anna Sue Marshall, numerous loved nieces and nephews and special friend; Ellen Nobles. Visitation with the family will be held Monday, August 19th from 3 to 7 pm at Burns Funeral Home 701 East 7th Street, Hobart, Indiana. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 900 Luther Drive, Hobart, Indiana. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Schererville, Indiana, with Reverend Nathan Kramer officiating.
