Alan F. Paquin

Alan Francis Paquin, 85, of Crown Point, IN, (formerly of Hammond, IN) was born December 1, 1938 in Cumberland, Wisconsin and passed away peacefully at home on January 24, 2024, lovingly surrounded by his family. Alan was preceded in death by his father Napoleon Paquin, mother Vivian (Paquin) Brands, step-father Harvey Brands, brother Gordon and his wife Darren Paquin, and sister Juanita Stevenson (Ronny). He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Paquin (Wiechecki), brothers Gary Paquin (Bev) and Steve Paquin (Joyce), children Ken Paquin (late Cyndi), Tim Paquin (Dawn) and Michele Magiera (Tom, His Favorite Son-in-Law) eight grandchildren, Kristyn Gerovac (Shane), Dustin Slemp, Josh Paquin (Rebekah), Amber Pennuto, Madison Magiera, Blake Paquin, Mac Magiera, Zacry Magiera, along with six great grandchildren (one on the way) and many nieces and nephews. Al attended Hammond Technical School and joined the U.S. Army at just 17 years old, where he was stationed in France and served for 3 years. After his time in the military, he started a career at Ispat Inland Steel—where he worked for 42 years. Outside of work, he was a very active member of Local 1010. He loved to bowl and competed in a bowling league for 40 years. He enjoyed his daily sudoku puzzles, golfing, fishing, waterskiing and spending summers at Lake Shafer in Monticello with his family. He coached both of his sons’ baseball teams and loved attending his children’s and later his grandchildren’s sporting events and games. A big Chicago sports fan, he never missed a Bears or White Sox game. After his retirement, Al continued working part-time for another 18 years at the Union hall. Meanwhile, him and his wife, Mary, traveled the world, visiting Cuba, Hawaii, Alaska, Greece, Germany, and Italy among many other places. His favorite place he visited was Australia. He became lovingly known as Gpa to his family as he was a doting grandpa, who loved showing off his grandkids. From playing pretend with his grandkids to attending every real-life event, Gpa was always there for his family. He loved spending time with them and started a tradition of taking all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on an annual family vacation. This tradition went on for seven years in seven different locations and created beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. He scoped out every new place traveled, and his family always joked that he would have made a good FBI agent. He was also the honorary inspector for TMZ Properties, inspecting all the properties his daughter and son-in-law worked on. He was always looking out for the ones he loved. Al was incredibly loved and will be so dearly missed. A visitation hour will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7667 E 109th Ave, Crown Point, IN. A celebration of life mass will be held immediately after 10 a.m. by Father Tom Mischler, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Calumet.
