Our cherished Mary Katherine Scheub, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 with her loving family by her side. A resident of Crown Point, IN formerly a Schererville, IN resident where she and her husband, Gerry were active members of the community and abundantly blessed for many years. Mary, age 85, was the proud wife for 65 years to Gerry J Scheub; remarkable mother to Thomas Scheub, Theresa (late Tim) Kapitan, Timothy (Jacqueline) Scheub, Todd (Robyn) Scheub, Tony (Karrie) Scheub, adored grandmother to Daniel (Alexa) Kapitan, Katherine (Andrew) Bultema, Nathan Ballas, Kyle (Brittany) Kapitan, Colin Scheub, Cory (Alli) Scheub, Sarah (Mike) Pryszcz, Madison Tomsic, Taryn Scheub, Tanner Scheub, Trey Scheub, Haley Scheub; cherished great grandmother to Reid & Owen Kapitan, Elli & Deklan Bultema, Tristin & Wyatt Ballas, Finley, Cy, & Lennix Kapitan, Scottie Mae Scheub; sister to Carolyn Davidson, Jan Raymond. Preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Marcella Petersen; sisters, Frances (George) Sirko, Patricia Christenson; in-laws, Fred and Evelyn Scheub, Harold Scheub, Fred (Rosemary) Scheub, and Judy Scheub. Mary was a compassionate woman who never knew a stranger, her caring heart touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Born on November 6, 1939, in Gary, IN, growing up one of five daughters with a full and vibrant life. She adored her beautiful sisters who were her dearest friends and arguably the best card players in town. From an early age, she displayed a kind spirit, leading by example and always putting others before herself. Her years as a sorority sister at Delta Theta Tau and volunteering at Meals on Wheels were just a few examples of the small gestures from her very big heart. A devout Catholic, donating her time as a sacristan, greeter, Altar Rosary Society member, and serving on the festival committee at her former parish, St. Michael’s the Archangel Church of Schereville, IN where Gerry and Mary found it important to be involved parishioners for 49 years. Most recently, parishioners of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Crown Point, IN. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She held God and her family in the highest regard, dedicating herself to creating a home filled with honesty, values, and faith. She loved cheering on her children and grandchildren at their sporting events, cherished her Friday hair days with her dear friend, Colette, and filled her free time with bowling, playing cards, gardening, and canning. She found joy in the kitchen cooking, baking, completing the latest cross word puzzle, listening to the sounds of the Cubs game or Elvis coming through the radio, sharing laughs with Gerry, friends, and family that popped in for some of her hospitality and wisdom. Caring for people just came natural for her, Mary will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. directly at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1 W. Wilhelm Road, Schererville, IN. Rev. Martin Dobrzynski officiating. Mary’s family takes comfort in knowing that her faithful heart has brought her to eternal Glory with the Lord. The family is also deeply grateful for the committed and kindhearted caregivers who provided comfort and enhanced her quality of life in her final days.
