Eleanor L. Steiger

Eleanor L. Steiger, age 82, of Merrillville, formerly of LOFS, Munster, South Holland, Il, and Hammond, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Eleanor was born in Chicago, Il to Gertrude and Ralph Bock. She graduated from Hammond High School, Class of 1945. She received her degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1949, where she was one of three women in the class. She was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She married her college sweetheart, Robert Steiger, the day after graduation, on August 20, 1949. She obtained her teaching license and taught Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus at Thornridge High School for many years. After retirement, she volunteered for the Service League of Hammond, Meals on Wheels, Tri Kappa and Four Seasons Garden Club. She grew up sailing on Lake Michigan and enjoyed the outdoors, especially the family cabin in Colorado, and taking long walks. She was also a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hammond, IN. Her devoted husband of 55 years, Robert and her daughter, Carol Steiger Kuendig, preceded Eleanor in death. She is survived by five children: Robert, Jr. (Karen), Paul (Sue), Jim (Karen), Ralph (Joanne), Barbara (Dan) Janke, and son-in-law, Bill Kluendig. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Matt, Sarah, Emily, Ralph, Heide, Ellie, Mike, Jordan, Eric, Sig, Rachel, Jillian, Martha (Jasi) Kondal, Amy (Sam) Anderson, Bill ( Jesse) Kuendig, and Trish Kuendig, and 6 great-grandchildren, Amelia, Elizabeth and JP Kondal, Wyatt and Addie Anderson, and Audrey Kuendig, brother Bob (Sheila) Bock and brother-in-law Ray (Nora) Steiger. Funeral services will take place DIRECTLY at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7227 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN., on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at 11:00 am, she will lie in state from 10:00 to 11:00 am (time of service), interment Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond IN. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN.
