Catherine M. Comerford

Catherine Mae (Katie) Comerford, age 87, of Crown Point, IN, passed away September 5th, 2011. She married Philip Comerford in 1947,who preceded her in death. She was first a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She loved and nurtured her family and will be missed more than words can say. She taught by example and left a wonderful legacy of how to be a great parent and friend. Her children Judy Candiano (Hobart), Patrick (Debra) Comerford (Valparaiso), Mary Jane (David) Lahr (Alabama), Phyllis (James) Polarek (Valparaiso) and Kathleen (Richard) Klimek (Florida) were blessed to be raised by parents who cared and gave selflessly of their time and love. Catherine will be missed, too, by the Grandchildren who meant the world to her; Brian (Melissa) Comerford, Kevin Comerford, Kylie (Chad) Smith, Lindsey (Jon) Miller, Katie (Zak) Pala, Carolyn (Chris) Michael, Andrew Lahr, Patrick Lahr, Richard Klimek, Jr., Lauren Klimek and James Polarek and Great-Grandchildren Seth, Tristen and Payton Michael, Kelsie Comerford, Cade Comerford, Kellen and Declan Miller and Connor Smith, Andrew James Gilligan. Katie treated her friends like family and was blessed to have many. Many of her dearest friendships were made during her very early years of training as RN at St. Mary Mercy School of Nursing. Those who she leaves behind, Mary, Thelma, Ginger, Ruth, Joan and Ethel were more than friends, she considered them her sisters. Following her 20 years as Obstetrical nurse for St. Mary Mercy Hospital, she worked as a School Nurse with Lake County Health Department. She treasured her Pinnacle Club made up of Nurses who loved playing cards, traveling together and watching over each other. In retirement, she was blessed to have wonderful friends who shared her love of bridge, playing regularly in each other’s homes. Born in Duluth, MN, Katie was raised in Gary, Indiana, raised her family in Merrillville, and recently lived in Crown Point. In Merrillville she made dear and lasting friendships with neighbors, especially Jane and Jim Sheeran. She led a life filled with family and friends who will cherish her memory. Friends may meet with the family on Thursday, September 8, 2011, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN and on Friday, September 9, 2011, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony Nursing Home Chapel, 203 Franciscan Drive, Crown Point. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Myron Lowisz officiating. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Portage. Contributions may be made to the donor’s choice of charity.
